Lanka Jathika Sarvodaya is the largest non-government organisation in Sri Lanka, active in over 5,600 villages and providing a livelihood for many of the poorest people in the country. Products include wooden and soft toys, batik, basket ware, silver jewelery, masks, and coconut shell products. The aim is to promote stronger village communities able to meet the basic needs of shelter, food, clothing, and health. It has established over 4,000 pre-schools, provides education in health and childcare as well as technical training, constructs roads, water supplies, latrines and housing. In addition, Sarvodaya operates a wide variety of programmes, including drug abuse rehabilitation and education, human rights protection, HIV/AIDS education, and counseling for victims of the civil war. Other programmes promote peace and peace education, including the training of Buddhist monks in conflict resolution.
