My first encounter with photography was in 1977 when I went to the Fox-Talbot Museum of Photography in England and picked up a book of Wynn Bullock’s photographs. I was mesmerized, not just by the photography but also the locations. Later, I saw more amazing photographs by Ansel Adams, especially his 1958 photograph “Aspens, N. New Mexico.” I knew I wanted to humbly attempt to follow in their footsteps.
I knew I had to change my way of thinking so that I could see and appreciate the natural beauty in everything around me. In the last five years as a photographer, that is what I have been attempting to do; starting close at hand with the things that surround me: Flowers, trees and landscapes. When my wife and I moved to Northern California from Arizona the overwhelming abundance of trees, mountains, orchards and especially flowers just enthralled my senses. My first flower photograph was taken at our neighbors’ home where their entire backyard was covered in irises. When I saw the flowers and how incredibly detailed they were, it opened my eyes to their powerful and magnificent intricacy. Marc Sheridan
